Press Release: Santa Cruz City Council Unanimously Passes Resolution in Support of Water & Wildfire Protection Act

City joins County Board of Supervisors in supporting November ballot measure

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The Santa Cruz City Council has joined the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in unanimously passing a resolution to support the Water & Wildfire Protection Act, which will be on the ballot for Santa Cruz County voters in November 2024. The Santa Cruz City Council vote was held June 11, 2024, and was preceded by the County Board of Supervisors vote on June 4, 2024.

“What’s really exciting to me is the possibility of a funding source for local nonprofits like Sempervirens and the Land Trust, who have been in this space for so long and see the opportunities and challenges we face,” said Councilmember Sandy Brown. “This is a measure that will provide significant critical resources to address challenges and create new opportunities.”

“This plan really does have a lot to offer,” said Supervisor Bruce McPherson. “I think it’s going to bolster our natural resources, as well as direct County funding for resiliency, parks and fire prevention.”

The Santa Cruz City Council and County Board of Supervisors join a broad and growing list of community organizations and elected officials that have endorsed the measure.

Partial list of organizations: Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, Sempervirens Fund, Peninsula Open Space Trust, Save Our Shores, Fire Safe Council of Santa Cruz County, Coastal Watershed Council, Watsonville Wetlands Watch, Save the Redwoods League, Regeneración - Pajaro Valley Climate Action, County Park Friends, Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, Friends of Watsonville Parks & Community Services, Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County, Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship and Mid County Democratic Club.
